Founder & Its Mission

Rakesh Thapliyal

It is immediately apparent from his glowing golden skin, powerful vitality, and peaceful demeanor that Rakesh Thapliyal actively practices what he preaches. It is near impossible to not be charmed by his genuine personality, his love of yoga, his whole-hearted desire to make the world a better place and teach the unique yoga style for the modern world called ShivaYogShala (combination of principle of yoga, Shiva & Shakti, Ayurveda, Vedanta and spiritual philosophy).

Rakesh was born in the foothills of Himalayan Mountains. He took advantage of being raised in the Yoga Birth City Called Rishikesh. From the early age his parent started sending him to the Ashrams in order to facilitate his recovery from stretch of ill-health following the monsoon season. As he started getting better he developed deep interest in yoga.

He started his journey to discover different sages and spiritual Gurus in Rishikesh Ashrams with the help of his uncle who used to work voluntarily for Ashrams. Rakesh loved to visit these Ashrams and listen to them with a full devotion, in which includes the Sivananda Ashram, Parmarth Niketan Ashram, Jai Ram Ashram, practiced intensive yoga with Brahmacharya Rudra Dev Ji, a Senior Iyengar teacher at Yoga Study Center Rishikesh and many more. Rakesh met his full-time spiritual teacher, Yogacharya Shri Laxmi Narayan Joshi, who recognized something unique within him and started nurturing his interest in Yoga. Under the careful guidance of his Guru, Rakesh travelled various parts of India learning and teaching Yoga at different ashrams, later extending his education at these places by helping treat people with health issues.
While at university studying a Bachelor of Commerce and Masters in Philosophy he won accolades for his Yoga skills, becoming recognized at national level, and went on to contribute extensively to International Yoga week held each year in Rishikesh. His Guru then recommended that he start traveling to other countries to enhance his understanding of other cultures in order to make him a better teacher, so he began by traveling in India and then to Mauritius, Egypt, Russia, Mexico, Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Canada and United States. He worked in a renowned hospitality industry such as Ananda In The Himalayas, Four Season Hotels & Resorts International, Marriott International and The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, L.L.C. He views this as a natural progression of his journey. When speaking about his future, Rakesh remains philosophical admitting that travel will be a key factor as this will allow him to share his knowledge while also broadening his own experience. “Places call you”, he says. “I am running in the flow where people call me. Where I need them, and they need me”. With such passion, wisdom and positive energy manifesting in someone, this is one journey that is bound to be an interesting one.

In his words “Everything comes back to you. If you don’t pay attention to your body, your body will eventually not pay attention to you”. In the words of Steve jobs “What is the most expensive bed in the world? – “Sick bed” … You can employ someone to drive the car for you, make money for you but you cannot have someone to bear the sickness for you.Material things lost can be found. But there is one thing that can never be found when it is lost – “Life”. When a person goes into the operating room, he will realize that there is one book that he has yet to finish reading – “Book of Healthy Life”.

Rakesh is adamant that yoga is not a religion. “it is about body, mind, soul and spiritual transformation,” he says. “yoga provides well-being to the body, serenity to the mind and nirvana to the soul”.
